High Power 808nm Sony Laser Diodes

UK optoelectronics device manufacturer and laser diode specialist, Photonic Products, is pleased to introduce Sony's new, high power, 808nm wavelength array laser diodes, the SLD 43 series; designed for high power solid state laser excitation or material processing applications such as laser welding and cutting. The SLD433S4 laser diode has a high efficiency water cooling package enabling it to attain optical power output of 60W.

The cooling system is a CPU cooler modified to do keep the GaAS diode happy as it consumes over 120 watts of power.

808nm Laser Diodes 20W output with passive cooling

Osram Opto Semiconductors has developed an air-cooled version of the Sirilas laser diode for mobile applications that require less output and no water cooling. The compact module contains a laser bar comprising 16 individual emitters. The modules can be integrated in diode laser arrays, with the emitters individually replaceable in case of failure. Normal circulating air and fans or thermoelectric coolers offer sufficient cooling for these laser diodes to operate. The heat sink consists of solid copper material with high thermal conductivity. An integrated lens produces an almost parallel beam with a typical vertical divergence of 1.5° (full angle). The air-cooled version is used for pumping compact, solid-state lasers of low-to-medium output. With a wavelength of 808nm, it is suitable for neodym-doped, solid-state lasers (Nd-YAG). These are used in marking or engraving applications, mobile medical equipment for ophthalmology and dentistry as well as in the consumer sector for cosmetic treatment. Chips with 800 to 1000nm wavelengths can also be integrated in the package.

808 nm Diode from a Green Laser Pointer

While fitting a heatsink to the outside of a green laser pointer I broke the cyanoacrylate glue holding the driver board to the brass housing. I did not think this was a problem. I was quite wrong. A laser diode is very fragile inside. I thought I only had to be careful with heat and static shock. Here are some photos of the inside of a dead 808nm laser diode.
